Science & Society Activities:
iGEM is an international synthetic biology competition, organized by MIT. Dr Koumandou was co-PI of the iGEM Athens student team, which won a silver medal and the Best Project Promotion Video Prize in 2020 and a gold medal and a Team Impact Grant in 2021.

Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology.

FameLab is an international competition to find and support the world's most talented new science communicators. Participants have three minutes to win over the judges and audience with a scientific talk that excels for its content, clarity and charisma. The British Council runs FameLab competitions in around 25 countries each year, and the winner of each national competition travels to the UK's renowned Cheltenham Science Festival in June to compete in the FameLab International Final. Dr Koumandou was a member of the judging panel for the FameLab Greece competition in 2020 and 2021.

Pint of Science is a 3-day festival which takes place annually in the month of May and simultaneously in hundreds of venues across the world. It aims to deliver interesting and relevant talks on the latest science research in an accessible format to the public – mainly across bars, pubs, cafes and other public spaces. It provides a platform which allows people to discuss research with the people who carry it out and no prior knowledge of the subject is required. Dr Koumandou presented a talk in May 2018 when Pint of Science first came to Greece.

The Athens Science Festival is a week of experiment demonstrations for kids of all ages, workshops, talks, performances, science & art installations, and other happenings. The festival runs once a year, for a week in the spring, in Technopolis at the center of Athens. It is organized by the educational organization “Science Communication – SciCo”, the British Council, the Onassis Scholars’ Association and the General Secretariat for Research & Technology, in collaboration with various academic, research and educational institutes. Dr Koumandou was part of the organizing team of the first festival in 2014, helping to organize Cafe Scientifiique talks.
